Scottish Temperate Rainforest.
Ferry Wood is a good example of a Scottish Temperate Rainforest, situated as it is on the edge of the Atlantic coast of Scotland. Temperate rainforests are found along ocean-facing shores and oceanic islands where humidity is always high and there is plenty of rainfall. Our wood is protected from the worst of the gales by the Hebridean islands of Islay and Jura. It’s also sheltered a little by being beside the shores of West Loch Tarbert rather than right on the sea coast itself.
You can tell it’s rainforest from the mosses, lichens, liverworts fungi and ferns that cover the trunks and branches of the trees, and carpet bare boulders and screes and rock faces. Neither bark nor stone are visible; instead an amazing variety of shape, colour and texture welcomes you.
Oak is the main tree to be found in the wood, though there are significant areas of birch, willow and hazel, with scattered holly and rowan.
Carina and Ed have been restoring the 40-acre wood for over 7 years now and are keen to share their knowledge and experience.
