Scottish Temperate Rainforest.
Join us on our 40-acre ancient coastal Atlantic oak woodland, Ferry Wood, a temperate rainforest we’ve restored since 2016.
Located close to the fishing village of Tarbert Loch Fyne in Argyll, Ferry Wood is one of many fragments of rainforest hanging on along the shores of the loch and has survived because it’s on a rocky terraced hillside unsuitable for agriculture. In true Gaelic tradition, we look to the sea for fish, seaweed (for eating and mulching), and inspiration.
We are also founders of Action West Loch, a local group seeking to restore the ecosystems of the loch itself, the rivers feeding it, and the land on its shores, which consist of rainforest fragments in need of protection and the creation of linking corridors.
By volunteering, you can make a positive environmental impact on our local region. Tasks include clearing invasive rhododendrons, monitoring vegetation changes, and scything bracken to name a few.
There is a comfortable cabin on site and further accommodation is provided in our self-built ecohouse. We have wifi available in our house. There is no wifi available at the cabin.
Volunteer placements are flexible as we love to hear of people’s interest, skillset, and availability to get involved. (Day volunteers are welcome!)
If you’re interested in woodland management and joining Scotland’s drive to save our rainforests, this is the place for you!
