Carina and I (Ed) brought Ferry Wood over 7 years ago, and soon afterwards began work on restoring it.
It is very much a work in progress. During that time we’ve learned a lot about the issues facing the UK’s remaining rainforest fragments, and attempted to put things in place so that Ferry Wood can heal.
This blog is about ours – and Ferry Wood’s journey – during the past 7 years.
The wood is located about nine miles SW of the fishing village of Tarbert Loch Fyne in Argyll. It’s on the shores of West Loch Tarbert, near where it opens out into the Sound of Gigha. Beyond Gigha lie the Inner Hebridean Islands of Islay and Jura, which protect us from the worst effects of the Atlantic storms.
It’s one of many fragments of rainforest hanging on along the shores of the loch and has survived because it’s on a rocky terraced hillside unsuitable for agriculture.
